Seventeen Magazine, AAA and the U.S. Department of Transportation recently announced a new contest that could help inspire teens to keep their hands off their keypads and on the wheel.

The idea that girls are more responsible than boys has meant cheaper car insurance for girls for decades. But it turns out that girls are driving just as dangerously these days, maybe even more so than boys. That’s got insurance companies raising rates for girl drivers.

Top factors contributing to young driver crashes

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death of teenagers. Per mile
driven, teens are involved in three times as many fatal crashes as all other drivers.
Many do not realize driving is not a right, but a privilege that can be taken away. It
comes with a responsibility to keep themselves and others safe.

The State of Teen Driving 2009 found that while today’s teen drivers have similar attitudes and behaviors behind the wheel than teens in 2005, shifts have taken place in unexpected areas.
